Amazon Prime is filled with Alex Jones conspiracy theory videos it calls 'documentaries'

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Mon, 06/18/2018 - 15:54

Amazon Prime's documentary genre features many Academy Award-winning feats of investigative journalism. But it has a problem: Amazon categorizes legitimate documentaries from HBO and PBS in the same way that it does conspiracy theory films from the likes of Alex Jones.

The Telegraph first reported the troubling appearance of conspiracy theory "documentaries" on the streaming platform, in particular films from Jones and noted crazy-person David Icke. Jones is the talking head of InfoWars, who is currently being sued by families of Sandy Hook shooting victims for claiming that the deaths of their children was a hoax. Icke is a conspiracy theorist who calls himself a "conspiracy realist." Read more...

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Mon, 06/18/2018 - 15:40

Pokémon Go trainers, brace yourselves. You can begin trading Pokémon this week.

The popular mobile game has added a slew of features since its 2016 launch, but a new addition reminiscent of the classic Pokémon Game Boy games will finally roll out this week.

SEE ALSO: The Pokémon games on Nintendo Switch look like a dream come true

Niantic, the developer behind Pokémon Go, announced the big update today along with a new feature that will now allow trainers to curate friends lists, which the company calls "social features," that aim to foster a greater in-person Pokémon Go community.

There will also be Alolan forms (a type of Pokémon) that trainers can only obtain by working together with their friends, and other rewards that stem from building strong friendships in the game, such as Stardust discounts. Read more...

Merriam-Webster burns Trump over misspelling in one of his very worst tweets

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Mon, 06/18/2018 - 15:24

President Donald Trump sent some awful tweets on Monday morning about his administration's policy of separating children from their parents at our border — which it turns out is a word he cannot even spell.

In one of a series of very terrible tweets, Trump misspelled "border" as "boarder," hardly the first typo he's made but one that's all the more glaring because of his obsession with "The Wall" and that aforementioned inhumane policy that is currently being enforced. Read more...

Amazon and Walmart have sick deals on 4K smart TVs this week from brands like Samsung, LG, and VIZIO

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Mon, 06/18/2018 - 15:24

I guess the World Cup is kind of a big deal, huh? It's like even if you don't care about sports, you still kinda care about the World Cup.

It's no wonder everyone is screaming (and jumping) while they watch — games and goals are so fast and even the tiniest of movements can lead to a huge play, so missing even a second due to lag or shitty resolution is unacceptable.

SEE ALSO: How to watch the World Cup (and other sports) live without cable or a TV

If you're tired of squinting to see where the ball went on your laptop or are tired of going to the bar only to crane your neck for 90 mins just to catch a sliver of the TV, we got you. While we don't have tickets for you to attend a game in Russia, we do have deals on 4K smart TVs from Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Dell, which is basically the next best thing. Read more...

Remember that time time Fox News said Mister Rogers was 'evil'?

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Mon, 06/18/2018 - 14:37

"This evil, evil man has now ruined a generation of kids."

That's how the folks of Fox and Friends once described Mister Rogers.

In a 2007 clip from the show, the show hosts go on a tirade claiming the man behind Mister Rogers Neighborhood managed to "discount" hard work by telling children that they were special, and have therefore "ruined" kids by making them entitled. Their bold commentary has resurfaced following the critically acclaimed release of Won't You Be My Neighbor?

Considering the positive impact that Rogers had on children who grew up watching his public television show, it's an amusing smear campaign to watch years later — and thankfully, it hasn't hurt his legacy one bit. Read more...

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Mon, 06/18/2018 - 14:12

As the debate rages on about the Trump administration's horrific policy of separating undocumented parents from their children as they attempt to cross the border between the United States and Mexico, the fight between officials and lawmakers has spilled over onto social media.

One tweet, in particular, from Homeland Security Secretary Kristjen Nielsen, has served as a flashpoint. She tweeted on Sunday that the DHS doesn't "have a policy of separating families at the border. Period."

We do not have a policy of separating families at the border. Period.

You can thank this cool grandma for Mexico's big World Cup win

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Mon, 06/18/2018 - 13:32

We are sure the players on Mexico's soccer team are "talented" and "skilled athletes," but they really owe their earthquake-inducing win on Sunday to one grandmother.

Willy Gonzalez of El Paso, Texas, watched the game on TV with his family, and he saw it all go down. During the national anthem, Willy's mother blessed each Mexican player as they appeared onscreen. Later, the team won a stunning victory over Germany.

Coincidence? Nope!

Apple to add life-saving new feature in iOS 12

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Mon, 06/18/2018 - 11:50

People who call 911 from their iPhone will be able to automatically share their exact location with first responders, Apple announced on Monday.

The feature, which will only be available to users in the U.S. at launch, is slated to become available later this year with the launch of iOS 12.

SEE ALSO: iOS 12 fixes the iPhone X's horrible screenshot problem

To enable this new feature, Apple is using its HELO (Hybridized Emergency Location) technology, launched in 2015, which estimates the caller's location using a variety of sources, including cell towers as well as GPS and Wi-Fi access point data. Apple will also use technology from emergency technology company RapidSOS to share HELO location data with 911 centers.  Read more...

I'm a Slytherin on Twitter but a Hufflepuff on Instagram

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Mon, 06/18/2018 - 11:00

This post is part of Me, online, Mashable's ongoing series digging into online identities.

I have a confession to make: I'm a Slytherin on Twitter.

Yes, it's true.

I'm a full-blown Ravenclaw in real life, and yet somehow, on Twitter, I code switch into the most Slytherin version of myself.

I'm kind of mean, sort of conniving, and somewhat power-hungry in the way I keep track of my follower count. I also don't particularly care about being liked on Twitter as long as I'm respected, and I'm willing to call people out if they're being boneheaded in my timeline.
