Crisis counselors were on set for 'When They See Us' cast and crew

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 06/01/2019 - 18:06

The actors and everyone on set filming the recently released Netflix miniseries, When They See Us, had access to crisis counseling to help with the heavy, based-on-real-life material portrayed on screen.

Ava DuVernay's four-part series, released Friday, goes into the 1989 story of five boys who were wrongly accused, arrested, convicted, imprisoned, and eventually exonerated in the "Central Park Five" case. The teens spent between five and 13 years in prison for a sexual assault they were falsely blamed of committing.

Actor Niecy Nash, who played the mother of one of the boys, spoke about the filming process, noting this was the first set she'd been on that provided crisis counseling at the end of the day. In Elle, she said, "Because the material is so weighty, and it's so heavy, and you feel the effect of it, whether you are filming it or acting in it, or being background in it or whatever it is. I love that [DuVernay] has that level of care for her actors." Read more...

'Pokémon Go' will no longer be supported on Apple Watch

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 06/01/2019 - 17:59

Get your wrist-mounted adventures in while you can, Trainers: Niantic is pulling the plug on Pokémon Go for Apple Watch.

The game's developer noted in a support article that players will no longer be able to connect their Apple Watch to the app as of July 1, 2019 (h/t 9to5Mac). The change is apparently tied to a feature called Adventure Sync that Niantic launched in 2018.

Adventure Sync gives players the ability to track their distance traveled even when the Pokémon Go app isn't open. Once the app is synced with either Apple Health or Google Fit, users receive a weekly fitness report. That's in addition to the in-game benefits of an active lifestyle, namely more eggs hatched. Martian clouds sail above NASA's Curiosity rover

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 06/01/2019 - 16:42

While traversing across rocky plains in the shadow of Mount Sharp, the Mars Curiosity rover captured wispy clouds hovering in the sky.

The car-sized robot — which landed on Mars in 2012 — captured these lofty clouds on May 17, 2019, which translates to the 2410th sol, or Martian day, of its mission.

From millions of miles away, NASA scientists suspect these clouds hovered some 19-miles above the red Martian surface. NASA also notes the clouds are "noctilucent," meaning they're high enough for sunlight to pass through the floating mass of water and ice.

Earlier in May, the rover captured other high-altitude clouds, too, sailing over the nuclear-powered, six-wheeled rover.  Read more...

Elton John issues a defiant statement after 'Rocketman' is censored in Russia

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 06/01/2019 - 15:40

The Russian release of Rocketman is missing a number of scenes, including those that depict drug use and gay relations between two men. Elton John, the subject of the critically hailed new biopic, is not pleased.

John issued a strongly worded statement via Twitter on Friday evening in response to reports from an early screening in Moscow. The statement specifically singles out the "local distributor" in Russia, calling the changes "a sad reflection of the divided world we still live in and how it can be so cruelly unaccepting of the love between two people."

The best YouTube videos to help you come out

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 06/01/2019 - 15:00

Mashable is celebrating Pride Month by exploring the modern LGBTQ world, from the people that make up the community to the spaces where they congregate, both online and off.

When I was a 26-year-old adult looking to come out as queer, I turned to YouTube for support.

Mind you, this was 2009, when coming out videos, a genre in which the subject publicly comes out of the closet or offers coming out advice, were beginning to emerge. YouTube user EatYourPeas18 is believed to have posted one of the earliest coming out videos in 2007. (The original was taken down, but a new version was later re-uploaded.) Read more...

NASA spots explosion of X-rays glowing in the universe

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 06/01/2019 - 14:37

NASA peers deep into the cosmos at the bright, leftover cinders of exploded stars, called pulsars.

Now, the space agency has released a map-like image showing loops and arcs of X-ray energy — invisible to the naked eye — radiating from these dense cores of once massive stars.

The most radiant spots are the suspected pulsars, repeatedly blasting X-ray energy into space. These trails of energy, or electromagnetic radiation, reveal the powerful sources of these X-rays.

"Even with minimal processing, this image reveals the Cygnus Loop, a supernova remnant about 90 light-years across and thought to be 5,000 to 8,000 years old,” said NASA's Keith Gendreau, who leads the imaging mission called NICER, in a statement. “We’re gradually building up a new X-ray image of the whole sky, and it’s possible NICER’s nighttime sweeps will uncover previously unknown sources.”  Read more...

That 'Baby Shark' remix from Coachella has been released

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 06/01/2019 - 14:13

Coachella had a "Baby Shark" moment this year, thanks to a remix by electronic music producer Jauz.

The remix, which was played to a huge crowd during the festival's daytime, was particularly incredible because of the transition into Darude's "Sandstorm," the musical equivalent of a meme.

Here's the moment if your mind needs refreshing:

Now Jauz's remix of "Baby Shark" has been released, as part of a collaboration between Jauz and Pinkfong, the South Korean education company behind the song's most popular version.

Jauz, real nam Sam Vogel, told Mashable he contacted Pinkfong to ask permission after his tweet promising to remix the children's song went viral, allowing him to premiere it at Coachella in 2019. Read more...

Here are the cities where you can get mobile 5G service from major carriers in the U.S.

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 06/01/2019 - 14:00

Mobile 5G is coming to the United States, whether you're ready for it or not. In fact, for some of us, it's already here.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of the business, mobile 5G service is still hard to come by for many people in the States. The major service providers have only just started rolling out their 5G service in select areas, and even if you happen to live in one of those cities, most phones don't have 5G support built-in just yet.

Still, if you manage to get your hands on one of a device that can handle it, here are the places where you can theoretically try out ultra-fast mobile internet.  Read more...

Representation is abysmal, so here are 15 animated characters the trans community has claimed

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 06/01/2019 - 13:00

Mashable is celebrating Pride Month by exploring the modern LGBTQ world, from the people that make up the community to the spaces where they congregate, both online and off.

What do you do when you can't see yourself directly represented on the screen? Find a character, point at them, and say "big mood."

This is especially true in the realm of animation, where it feels like an uphill battle to find stories that reflect any positive sense of the trans experience. Some TV shows and movies, especially for kids, seem to be testing the waters of mainstream LGBT+ acceptance. Adding same-sex couples as background characters and subtle expressions of queer love is definitely a big win in modern-day cartoons. However, it's still rare that trans characters get their animated time to shine.  Read more...

Rich with enchanting visual descriptions and dialogue that practically begs to be read aloud, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett's 1990 fantasy novel Good Omens is one book that belongs on-screen. Starring Michael Sheen as the angel Aziraphale and David Tennant as the demon Crowley, Good Omens chronicles the misadventures of a biblically opposed duo searching for the "misplaced" son of Satan before he can bring about the world's end.  Read more...

Redditor claims MacBook Pro exploded during 'normal use'

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 06/01/2019 - 11:00

Exploding gadgets aren't necessarily a new phenomenon, but a video that caught the attention of Reddit and Twitter users this week showed just how terrifying it can be.

A MacBook Pro belonging to a musician who goes by White Panda apparently exploded earlier this week, and we now know the intimate details thanks to a popular Reddit post and a Twitter thread.

White Panda captured a video of the explosion's aftermath, with smoke billowing out of the laptop and visible burn marks on the wood floor underneath it.

My MacBook Pro exploded today during normal use. No injuries, luckily. Some damage to the house. Could have been worse - good thing I wasn’t on a plane.

Very curious to see how @Apple responds.@MacRumors @TechCrunch @9to5mac

This is what it's like to control an autonomous car from miles away

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 06/01/2019 - 10:00

The exit ramp is a long, curving slope, and you have to make sure the 50-foot big rig you're driving carefully navigates the bend and doesn't fly out of control at a high speed.

But the thing is, you're not actually there. You're in a room in Silicon Valley, watching the ramp unfold in front of you on several screens. That heavy load you're carrying is thousands of miles away in Florida.

Welcome to teleoperated driving, or remote-controlled driving with a human in front of a steering wheel, brake, and gas pedals, and a "windshield" plastered with monitors. It's a method that allows autonomous vehicles to operate without anyone inside. Instead, there's a watchful remote driver, or operator, there for trickier moments that the robo-truck or vehicle can't handle. A few companies offer remote driving systems that work in conjunction with autonomous vehicles, like Phantom Auto and Starsky Robotics. Other robotics companies rely entirely on remote control. Even Waymo, the Google spin-off autonomous vehicle company, has Read more...

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 06/01/2019 - 09:00

Summer — AKA the sweating season — is rapidly approaching, when the matter of personal climate turns into a major battleground. For instance, your better half might like snoozing in sauna-like conditions, but you might not. Or vice versa. Either way, take matters into your own hands with the EvaSMART 2 — the personal A/C you can control right from your phone.

What Jake and Logan Paul's new gossip channel says about the state of YouTube

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Fri, 05/31/2019 - 21:44

Can you really discuss drama if you're at the center of the drama?

We regret to inform you that Jake and Logan Paul are teaming up once again — this time, they're skipping their usual impossibly loud antics to sit down and unpack YouTube drama in a shared tea channel called Jake 'n Logan.

Their first video predictably opens with the brothers squawking at the camera.

"Since we're brothers and we think alike, and we're the exact opposite, we'd get together once a week to talk about whatever," Logan said, turning to a cross-eyed Jake.

"This channel is going to be us talking about stuff on the internet," Jake continued.   Read more...
