Pungent meat props cause 'Saturday Night Live' sketch to go hilariously awry

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sun, 03/03/2019 - 14:52

Meat should always be refrigerated, whether it's for safety purposes or smelly purposes.

During a segment about meat on Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update, the ever-hilarious Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant came on as characters Vaneta and Wylene Starkie, owners of Smokery Farms, to talk about how they select animals for their meat gift delivery service. Pretty quickly, a prop meat basket arrives on the desk and you can immediately tell something is wrong.

It looks like a very real selection of mostly raw meats, and judging by McKinnon and Bryant's reactions, someone must have left it out in the warm air. Bryant commented that the scent of the box was strong while McKinnon was unable to hold back laughter. Read more...

HBO's 'Leaving Neverland' is a devastating account of the lingering consequences of sexual abuse

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sun, 03/03/2019 - 14:30

Invariably, the question arises any time accusations of past sexual abuse are raised against a powerful man: "Well, why did they wait so long to come forward then?"

It is always framed as persuasive proof of the victim's dishonesty. Wouldn't an honest person have spoken up sooner? What did they have to hide? What are they trying to get out of it now?

But what the past couple years of reckoning have shown us, and what Leaving Neverland now demonstrates to devastating effect, is that it's not nearly so simple.

SEE ALSO: Victims reclaimed their own narratives at Sundance 2019

Structurally, Leaving Neverland is straightforward. Dan Reed's four-hour, two-part documentary is built around in-depth interviews with Wade Robson and James Safechuck, two men who say they were abused by Michael Jackson as children. Their separate but similar tales unfold in chronological order, supplemented by archival photos and footage and sit-downs with their mothers, wives, and siblings. Read more...

Donald Trump's CPAC speech ripped to shreds on 'SNL' Weekend Update

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sun, 03/03/2019 - 13:32

The latest Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update segment had a lot of material to go through. But Donald Trump's Saturday afternoon speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) brought the most laughs. The only thing is: hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost had very little to do with it.

Instead of slicing Trump's two hour-plus performance apart with one-liners, the sketch let the president's words do all the talking. It's just clips of a grown-ass man and supposed leader of the free world babbling incoherently. Cool. Enjoy? Read more...

'Saturday Night Live' revisits the Michael Cohen hearing and all the G.O.P. self-owns

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sun, 03/03/2019 - 12:54

At Wednesday's Michael Cohen hearing, Donald Trump's former fixer sat in front of a group of U.S. lawmakers to detail, with evidence, how the president is a "racist," a "conman," and a "cheat." Rather than rising to Trump's defense, Cohen's Republican inquisitors spent much of the day shouting about the disbarred lawyer's credibility as a witness... and owning themselves in the process.

This was obviously fertile ground for Saturday Night Live writers to explore. Ben Stiller brought back his Cohen impression for this one, and he was joined by another surprise guest: Bill Hader, as an increasingly frazzled Ohio congressman, Jim Jordan. Read more...

As a wise person once said (okay, the Boy Scouts), you should always be prepared. In 2019, when we can do virtually anything with a smartphone or a wireless connection, it feels silly to carry around a Swiss Army knife at all times. Got a flat tire? You can call AAA or schedule an Uber to pick you up. Power goes out? It's okay, you'll still have cell service.

Still, there are some emergencies that even the latest, greatest technology can't solve. So to make sure that you're always prepared like the Boy Scouts intended, we rounded up five finds that will help you survive a crisis. Best of all, you can save an additional 15% off each item with the coupon code SEMIANNUAL. Read more...

10 of the most popular tech jobs in 2019 (and how to land one)

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sun, 03/03/2019 - 10:00

If the current job market had a mascot, it would have to be Kip from Napoleon Dynamite, a guy whose primary passion in life (after his wife Lafawnduh) is his beloved technology.

Much like Kip, the job landscape has placed tech up on a pedestal as of late. It's a marked reaction to the modern ubiquity of smartphones and other devices, as well as recent phenomena like the rise of automation, developments in artificial intelligence, and ongoing cybersecurity threats.

Duh, you know that. But what you might not know is just which jobs exactly you should be setting your sights on — and what you can do to get there. Read more...

Thomas the Tank Engine is the upsetting 'Resident Evil 2' mod we heathens deserve

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 03/02/2019 - 23:17

There's a new Tyrant in town and his name is Thomas the Tank Engine.

The latest and greatest in the seemingly inevitable line of Thomas the Tank Engine mods for the Resident Evil 2 remake has arrived — and while its existence isn't surprising, its application couldn't be more perfect.

The collaborative mod, created by developers ZombieAli and DJ Pop, replaces the wildly terrifying Mr. X — an unkillable creature that chases you for portions of the game — with an equally horrifying and tyrant-sized Thomas the Tank Engine.

Complete with the Thomas & Friends theme song and some exceptionally menacing choo-choos, Mr. Thomas can bust through walls, catch fire, and stalk Claire and Leon to his heart's content, just like his bumpy, hat-wearing predecessor. Read more...

In a glamorous turn of events, polar bears are pooping glitter to fight off extinction

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 03/02/2019 - 22:48

Fighting extinction is a daunting and demanding task, but it does come with some quirky perks for the scientists willing to tackle it — like the opportunity to sort through thousands of packages of glitzy, glittery polar bear poop.

Researchers at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens have been hard at work investigating means of conserving the global polar bear population since 2008. Focusing predominantly on the polar bear's reproductive system, these scientists have spent over a decade attempting to crack the code on increasing the species' population despite the continued threats posed by climate change. Ian McKellen apologized for tone-deaf remarks on Bryan Singer and Kevin Spacey

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 03/02/2019 - 21:42

Following a week of intense backlash, Ian McKellen has apologized for remarks he made at the end of February regarding the allegations of abuse surrounding director Bryan Singer and actor Kevin Spacey

In a statement posted Friday night (east coast time) via Twitter, the Lord of the Rings actor and equal rights activist walked back statements he made on #QueerAF, an intersectional queer podcast from National Student Pride, that implied Singer and Spacey became abusers as a result of their closeted homosexuality.

McKellen, notably a gay man himself, addressed the specifics of his controversial statements, saying that he expressed his intended point "clumsily."  Read more...

Do you still use a Microsoft Band smartwatch? You might have a refund waiting.

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 03/02/2019 - 18:25

If you're still using the Microsoft Band for all your smartwatch, fitness tracker, and wearable needs, your loyalty might pay off.

Though Microsoft discontinued the Band in 2016, it kept the online app services running so that owners could continue using the devices if they pleased. On Friday, however, the company announced all Band apps and services will end on May 31.

In an interesting move, though, Microsoft is allowing the dedicated people who've continued using the Band after it was discontinued to apply for refunds on the hardware.

People think this video of Rami Malek promoting a hotel is weird as hell

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 03/02/2019 - 15:04

You might consider yourself a fan of actor Rami Malek, but did you know he's a fan of a whole bunch of stuff, too?

He's a fan of Freddie Mercury and Queen, of course. But he's also fan of his mom, chamomile tea, handwritten letters, classic movies, and looking sharp "regardless of the occasion," to name a few.

We know all of this because the Bohemian Rhapsody star recorded a slightly bizarre promotional video for Mandarin Oriental hotels, titled "Rami Malek: I'm a fan." In the one-minute video, the actor sits in front of some beautiful scenery, listing his ~deep~ interests in a monotone voice as though he's reading a poem. Read more...

Pierce Brosnan drinking a latte of his own face is extremely good

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 03/02/2019 - 13:00

This is One Good Thing, a weekly column where we tell you about one of the few nice things that happened this week.

Pierce Brosnan is not a celebrity who you'd expect to have an excellent Instagram. Luckily, this ruined world still has a few surprises up its sleeve.

In a moment that really turned being online around for me this week, the former James Bond Instagrammed a video of himself drinking a latte of his own face. It was taken by Brosnan's The Misfits co-star Jamie Chung. (That's who's cracking up at the end.) Give her an Oscar!
