5 New Year's resolutions that can help the environment in 2019

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Fri, 01/04/2019 - 16:25

At the start of January, people typically make resolutions about health, money, and relationships, with the mindset of "new year, new me." In 2019, they need to add environmental goals to the list.

Last year was one of the hottest years on record, and rising temperatures along with climate-related changes are affecting the Arctic, wildlife, and people across the world. In November, a national report confirmed climate change is hurting Americans' quality of life, especially in lower-income neighborhoods and in some communities of color.

Audio recorded inside rainforests reveals a rowdy symphony of nature

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Fri, 01/04/2019 - 16:06

The deep rainforest is a symphony.

In the rainforests of Indonesia, New Guinea, and other wild lands, scientists strapped microphones to trees and recorded the boisterous howls, grumbles, and shrieks that echo through the woods. It's called bioacoustics, and in a new paper published Thursday in the journal Science, researchers highlighted the value of using recorded wild sound — which you can hear below — to gauge how animals are doing in both vulnerable and protected forests.

Modern satellite images certainly give detailed images of the forest canopies, and have proven valuable in grasping the health of rainforests. But they don't tell you what's happening to the creatures underneath the thick canopy — many of whom are vulnerable to hunting and overexploitation.  Read more...

Smartphone addiction affects teens and parents alike

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Fri, 01/04/2019 - 15:49

Tech addiction is a growing issue that's often centered around children and teens, but adults are plenty susceptible to problematic behaviors and overuse when it comes to smartphone and social media use.

Pew Research Center surveyed teens ages 13 to 17 and their parents. It found that both groups have plenty of trouble unplugging. Of the teens surveyed, 54 percent said they spend too much time on their smartphones, compared with 36 percent of parents.

An even higher percentage of teens, 72 percent, said they check messages and notifications as soon as they wake up. As cultural norms continue to shift toward a reality where people never truly "log off," 57 percent of parents said they do the same. Read more...

Chinese phone giant Huawei punished two employees for tweeting a New Year’s Day greeting from the company’s official Twitter account using an iPhone.

In an internal memo seen by Reuters, Huawei corporate senior vice president said “the incident caused damage to the Huawei brand.” As a result, two of the Chinese smartphone manufacturer's employees were demoted one rank and received a monthly cut in pay of 5,000 yuan (approximately $728). One of the employees, Huawei’s digital marketing director, will also see their pay rank frozen for 12 months.

The tweet from iPhone incident occurred when the Huawei’s outsourced social media agency, Sapient, experienced virtual private network (VPN) problems with its desktop computer, according to the memo.  Read more...

'A Series of Unfortunate Events' was right to change its finale from the books

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Fri, 01/04/2019 - 13:00

The television adaptation of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events is, much like the books it is based on, true to its name. Most of the action and drama contained in it can be boiled down to a literal series of very unfortunate events that occur in the lives of its heroes, the Baudelaire orphans, as well as most of the people surrounding them.

The Netflix show aired its third and final season at the beginning of the new year, and its finale is surprisingly more optimistic than the books’ ambiguous ending. When the books were published, the fate of the Baudelaires and its overarching moral was left open-ended. The Netflix series ends with decades-old mysteries solved, backstories filled in, and a reunion so sweet it almost comes out of left field. Still, the story's lessons on the great disappointments and gentle virtues of life were conveyed. Read more...

Screen time might not be so harmful or toxic for kids, experts say

Leading UK paediatricians have advised parents to worry less about the effects of screen time on their children.

A new guidance published by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) — a professional body in charge of the training of paediatricians — contests research suggesting that children's screen time is harmful.

Things like HTML tag structure and lead images might seem minor and irrelevant to an untrained user, but with a little training, one will come to realize that they're often the determining factors in whether your site ranks on the first page of Google search results or in No Man's Land (i.e., any page thereafter).

Now, you have a few options when it comes to said training. For one, you could go back to school and spend four-plus years and a hefty chunk of cash on communication, business, or web development degree. You could also just enroll in the Complete SEO Certification Training Bundle, which wraps up in under 40 hours and just went on sale in the Mashable Shop at a 96% discount.  Read more...

Eco-friendly chargers could be the new reusable straws — and these ones are on sale

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Fri, 01/04/2019 - 10:00

You've heard the statistic: Just 100 companies — fossil fuel producers, specifically — have been responsible for 71% of greenhouse gas emissions since 1988. That means individual efforts to combat climate change are effectively pointless, right? Even those reusable straws?

Au contraire, mon pessimiste: While things are pretty dire, we can do a lot of good individually by being stingier with the fossil fuels those companies produce, becoming more mindful of how our goods are made, and electing officials who prioritize the environment. (That's a very abridged version of the advice of Richard Heede, co-founder and co-director of the Climate Accountability Institute, who spoke to Vox about the matter a few months ago.) Read more...
