App hoarders, it's time to Marie Kondo your phone

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 02/07/2019 - 12:30

If Marie Kondo were to appear before you right now, grab your smartphone out of your hand and thumb through your pages of apps, what do you think she'd say?

The Japanese guru of clean is all the rage in 2019, ever since Netflix debuted her TV show, with perfect resolution-related timing, on January 1. Her "spark joy" meme — toss anything that doesn't — is the Spanish Flu of our century: It has gone viral while we were paying attention to other crises, and its cleansing progress around the planet shows no signs of slowing. The tech world is only the latest vector of infection.

Kondo's big-time fame has happened to the chagrin of both hoarders and hipsters who'd long since digested the lessons in her book. I am somewhat sympathetic to the former camp, while my wife is firmly in the latter. She caught the KonMari virus in 2015, beginning the now-familiar rituals of emptying closets and saying goodbye to clothes that no longer served us. Friends began to come down with the bug, smiling serenely at the simplicity of their once-cluttered credenzas.  Read more...

After escaping the Trump chopping block twice, NASA's carbon sleuth will get blasted into space

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 02/07/2019 - 12:00

In early 2017, the Trump Administration tried to ax NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory 3, or OCO-3. It didn't work. Then, again in 2018, the White House sought to terminate the earth science instrument.

Again, the refrigerator-sized space machine persisted.

Now, SpaceX is set to launch OCO-3 to the International Space Station in the coming months, as early as April 25. Using a long robotic arm, astronauts will attach OCO-3 to the edge of the space station, allowing the instrument to peer down upon Earth and measure the planet's amassing concentrations of carbon dioxide — a potent greenhouse gas.  Read more...

Alicia Keys and James Corden's 'A Star Is Born' parody is pretty glorious

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 02/07/2019 - 10:56

In case you haven't heard, Alicia Keys is going to be hosting the 2019 Grammy Awards.

On The Late Late Show, Keys – who has won 15 Grammys herself, but never hosted before – asked two-time Grammy host James Corden for advice.

Corden delivered, and did it all in a pretty damn good parody cover of the hit song "Shallow" from A Star Is Born.

After hearing this, we'd be all for a new A Star Is Born reboot starring Keys and Corden. Read more...

Hailey Bieber is forced to choose between drinking bird saliva and a question about Fyre Festival

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 02/07/2019 - 10:38

The people who wrote the questions for James Corden's "Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts" segment really don't mess about.

This week the game — which involves a celebrity choosing between a disgusting food item and an awkward question — featured Hailey Bieber. And the first question was about one promo shoot she'd probably rather forget.

"How much money did you get to appear in the Fyre Festival promo?" asks a giggling James Corden in the clip above, referring to the controversial event that was the subject of two recent documentaries on Netflix and Hulu.

Bieber was ready with her reply, though. "I am not gonna share, but it made for a very generous donation to charity," she replied. Read more...

My terrible online dates live on as zombies on Instagram

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 02/07/2019 - 10:30

In our Love App-tually series, Mashable shines a light into the foggy world of online dating. Just in time for cuffing season.

Instagram has become a cemetery for my failed online dates.

I don't accidentally tap into their Stories, or stumble upon their posts as I aimlessly scroll through my timeline. But I unexpectedly trip on the graves of my failed romances while scrolling through a sea of smiling selfies or humble-braggy holiday snaps from my friends because of an unnerving Instagram feature.

Instagram's "Suggestions For You" feature, which pops up from time to time in timelines, shows you profiles it thinks you might be interested in following. Save the odd face of someone I went to school with, this particular feature is largely dominated with photos of men I've matched with on dating apps, gone on dates with, and decided, for whatever reason, that I'd rather not pursue a relationship with.  Read more...

You'll make a lot more as a DevOps engineer than it costs to become one — here's where to start

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 02/07/2019 - 10:00

For far too long, there's been a glaring schism between the Development and Operations teams in almost every organization.

Think of them as Iron Man and Captain America. While they share a common goal (shipping high-quality products to customers), they have clashing views and methodologies. Developers want to create as many features as fast as possible to satisfy the customers' demand, but the Operations team wants to contain this practice since introducing features at a rapid pace could disrupt and topple the system.

Because of this great divide in objectives, DevOps was born.

Now, DevOps professionals are in demand everywhere. DevOps engineers earn an average of $116,000 per year because of their exceptional skills in shipping products with minimal errors. Not too shabby, eh? Read more...

How Reddit is helping horror writers find success

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 02/07/2019 - 09:20

Jasper DeWitt wasn't always a horror writer.

Long before his work captured the interest of Ryan Reynolds, DeWitt's storytelling abilities were reserved for his friends. They'd play Dungeons and Dragons together, and their quests were based in the dark domains of the Ravenloft universe.

SEE ALSO: 8 things I learned when I published my debut novel

"To get ideas for these, I would obsessively read horror," DeWitt told Mashable, "particularly from the heyday of Gothic/supernatural fiction in the late 19th to early 20th century. My friends, noticing this, told me I should try my hand at writing horror myself, since I loved it so much." Read more...

Stephen Colbert skewers Trump's use of rhyming in his State of the Union address

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 02/07/2019 - 06:35

It's been 24 hours, so we've all had a little time to reflect on Donald Trump's State of the Union address — including Stephen Colbert.

The Late Show host destroyed Trump's speech one clip at a time immediately afterward on Tuesday, but on Wednesday night, he looped back to pick up one particular feature of Trump's speech: rhyming.

"If there is going to be peace and legislation, there cannot be war and investigation," Trump had said, referring to special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe.

"That's kinda cute. He threatened our democracy with a little poem," Colbert said, before composing his own limerick: Read more...

Yep, there's a 'Shaft' reboot, and it features three generations of Shafts

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 02/07/2019 - 06:08

Shaft is back.

The reboot of the franchise, which dropped a trailer on Wednesday, features the tagline "More Shaft than you can handle," and with good reason.

Shaft, as the next chapter is called, features the original 1971 Shaft played by Richard Roundtree, as well as Samuel L. Jackson from the 2000 iteration.

The latest addition to the family is John "JJ" Shaft III, played by Jessie T. Usher of Creed II and Independence Day: Resurgence fame. If you're wondering if they're all going to team up and be one badass group of Shafts, you're damn right.

Shaft is out in cinemas on Jun. 14.

Liam Hemsworth knows he's easily mistaken for his brothers

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 02/07/2019 - 05:43

The Hemsworths are all pretty handsome, but we understand, they can sometimes be difficult to tell apart.

It's a long-standing joke that The Tonight Show's Jimmy Fallon has made fun of in a skit released on Wednesday, where the late show host just can't quite figure out that it's Liam Hemsworth he's speaking to.

"I gotta tell ya, you were great in the Avengers movies. I just can't wait for Endgame, I'm freaking out," Fallon said.

That absent mindedness goes both ways, though.

"You know my wife is a huge fan of your show. You should see our DVR, nothing but Big Bang Theory. Bazinga!" Hemsworth replied.  Read more...

New 'Dumbo' trailer has more of Danny DeVito being himself

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 02/07/2019 - 04:43

The live-action remake of Dumbo is just around the corner, and yes, you've probably already seen our little friend fly.

In a new trailer released on Wednesday, we get a glimpse into the characters around the famed elephant, like Danny DeVito, who as the circus ringmaster reprises that snappy demeanour which we've loved from Matilda and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

There's also more of Colin Farrell as Holt Farrier, who cares for the elephant, but aside from that it's more of what you've seen before.

The Tim Burton-directed remake is a variation on the original, expanding "on the beloved classic story where differences are celebrated, family is cherished and dreams take flight."  Read more...

Unlike most of US, autonomous vehicles in the UK won't require riders

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 02/07/2019 - 02:59

As soon as this year, self-driving cars in the UK could be truly driverless.

That is, except for the remote control driver monitoring the vehicle while it drives in trial runs. But no one has to be in the car, so the future really is here.

The UK's Department for Transport put out an updated "Code of Practice" Wednesday for testing autonomous vehicles. In the new guidelines (the previous report was from 2015) for companies trialing self-driving vehicles it outlines what's permitted. Notably, "during trials, it is a legal requirement that there is a safety driver or safety operator ready and able to override the vehicle, though not necessarily within the vehicle." Read more...

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 02/07/2019 - 02:05

E-scooter injuries keep piling up

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 02/07/2019 - 01:24

E-scooters can cause way more than a few scrapes and bruises.

A UC Los Angeles study from last month looked at two Southern California hospitals and the number of electric scooter injuries reported there for about a year. It totaled 250 people sent to the ER and 100 with head injuries. Now Consumer Reports has found throughout the country more than 1,500 scooter-related injuries that can be blamed on the two-wheeled vehicles.

SEE ALSO: Yup, e-scooters are dangerous, study confirms – especially since nobody wears helmets

In a report released this week looking at e-scooter crashes since the end of 2017 when the motorized scooters started arriving en masse, CR found 1,545 patients treated for scooter-related injuries. This number was determined by contacting 110 hospitals and five transportation agencies. Sixty medical centers and other police, city, and transportation agencies responded. All cities had a major e-scooter-sharing company like Lime or Bird introduced to the area in the past year. Read more...
