Huawei's making tons of money, despite everything

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Fri, 03/29/2019 - 11:59

Huawei's financial results for 2018 are out, and the Chinese tech giant is making a killing.

The company posted 721.2 billion yuan ($107.4 billion) in revenue — 19.5 percent growth compared to 2017, and the first time the company surpassed the $100 billion yearly revenue mark. Net profit was 59.3 billion yuan ($8.8 billion), a 25.1 percent year-over-year increase.

And yet, Huawei's shunned by the U.S., the company CFO remains under house arrest under allegations of fraud, and a British government-led committee just released a scathing report saying the company's software may be buggy and insecure. Read more...

This week marks 13 years since the first episode of Hannah Montana aired back on March 24, 2006. To mark the occasion, Cyrus already shared one adorable throwback earlier in the week.

But Cyrus took things to a whole other level when she videoed herself singing and bopping along to "The Best of Both Worlds," her iconic banger from her Hannah Montana days. In the video, she also happens to be sporting a distinctly Hannah-esque hair-do. Read more...

Oppo's new Reno phone hides its selfie camera in a very different way

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Fri, 03/29/2019 - 10:37

Chinese smartphone maker Oppo, known for numerous attempts to get rid of the notch once and for all, has a new idea: a slanted pop-up selfie camera.

As seen in a series of leaks (including a video) posted by SlashLeaks, instead of hosting the selfie camera in a rectangular little pop-up box, the Reno's selfie camera and flash are placed in a longer slab of plastic that rises from the right side only.

Other than the shape, the Reno's popup camera is quite similar to other pop-up cameras we've seen — it shows up when you turn on the selfie camera app and retracts when you turn it off.  Read more...

14-year-old 'Black-ish' star Marsai Martin is a movie producer and what are we even doing with our lives

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Fri, 03/29/2019 - 10:16

You know that old saying about no matter how good you are at something, there's always someone out there that's better? Well, here to perfectly illustrate it is Black-ish star Marsai Martin.

In this case the "something" is life in general — because how many people can say they own their own company, are technically their parents' boss, and are producing their own movie at the age of 14?

Martin is the executive producer of Little — a reimagining of the Tom Hanks film Big.

"I was watching it [Big] and that's when I was thinking, what if we do this in like a modern perspective?" said Martin. "Give it a fresh take, and you know, make it more our time, and have it a female empowerment, all-black women cast." Read more...

Trevor Noah roasts Brexit using multiple British accents

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Fri, 03/29/2019 - 09:40

Even attempting to understand the ongoing nightmare that is Brexit is nigh on impossible — but Trevor Noah has an analogy that might help.

In The Daily Show clip above, he likens Britain leaving the EU to "the world's biggest escape the room", before launching into a range of chaotic British accents to emphasise the confusion.

To be fair, you can't fault his John Oliver impression. Read more...

Prep to teach English abroad with this 150-hour online course

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Fri, 03/29/2019 - 09:00

You probably already know this, but there's more to life than laboring inside a cubicle 40 hours a week. In fact, it's likely that you already catch yourself daydreaming about packing your bags and exploring the world.

But who's to say that you can't? Traveling to the other side of the globe is not an impossibility. You can do it and live your best life, all while making money at the same time. And how, you ask? The answer can be summarized in just four letters: TEFL.

Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is a career track that hundreds and thousands of people have found success in, and it's not hard to see why they did it. According to the British Council, 1.75 billion people worldwide are already speaking English, and that number is predicted to rise even further. The organization posits that by 2020, at least two billion people will be using it — or learning to use it. Read more...

One way to a higher salary? Master data management by taking a course on SQL.

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Fri, 03/29/2019 - 09:00

Where there's data, there are databases; and where there are databases, there is Standard Query Language (SQL). In a nutshell, SQL is a standardized method used for collecting specific data out of a massive database. Did we lose you yet?

To better explain it in a way that won't make your head spin, here's the ELI5 version: Let's say Siri is a database. Given that it's heavily fed with colossal amounts of data, it can pretty much answer almost every question you may have. If you want to extract information from Siri, you have to carefully structure a sentence or command in a way that can be easily understood by the system (say, if you need to find out the weather, you may come up with something like "Siri, what is the weather outside?") so you can get the most accurate result. That's essentially how SQL works. It's the language you use to interact with a database to make it respond to a query. Read more...

Facebook removes more pages in Philippines for misleading activity

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Fri, 03/29/2019 - 06:26

Facebook has continued its crackdown on coordinated misinformation in the Philippines.

The social media giant said on Friday it had taken down more than 200 pages, groups, and accounts in the country, which it said misled others about who they were and what they were doing.

SEE ALSO: Facebook bans white nationalism and white separatism

"We’re taking down these Pages and accounts based on their behavior, not the content they posted," Nathaniel Gleicher, Facebook's head of cybersecurity policy, said in a statement online.

"In this case, the people behind this activity coordinated with one another and used fake accounts to misrepresent themselves, and that was the basis for our action." Read more...

Matthew McConaughey, in disguise, tries to get random people 'high'

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Fri, 03/29/2019 - 05:10

In his new film The Beach Bum, Matthew McConaughey plays a guy named Moondog who is a big marijuana fan.

It makes him the perfect accompaniment to Jimmy Kimmel's regular segment, "High Witness News," which gets people to lie about being high.

Despite feeding random people on the street "THC infused" ketchup and baby food, no one seems to figure out that Moondog is a famous Hollywood actor. Except for McConaughey's co-star Snoop Dogg, of course. Read more...

GoFundMe donates to GoFundMe that's trolling another GoFundMe

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Fri, 03/29/2019 - 01:57

We forgive you if you're feeling a bit confused.

GoFundMe, the company, just donated $5,000 to a GoFundMe campaign set up to both counter and troll yet another GoFundMe campaign. But wait, it gets even weirder. In this convoluted battle of the GoFundMes, the tech company comes down on the humane side.

Welcome to San Francisco, 2019, where nothing makes sense, but you can still count on the city to collectively thumb its nose at some cartoonishly awful jerks.

According to SF Weekly, this all started with a group of wealthy San Francisco residents uniting to oppose the construction of a Navigation Center — think of it as a more comprehensive homeless shelter that offers services and counseling as well as a place to sleep — in their mostly fancy neighborhood.  Read more...

These new species of miniature frogs clearly have the best names

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Fri, 03/29/2019 - 01:33

These newly-described miniature frogs are the smallest of their kind in the world, and they also have very appropriate names.

The genus of frogs has been dubbed Mini, and it contains three species: Mini mumMini scule, and Mini ature. Pretty clever. The trio has been described in a new study by evolutionary biologist Mark Scherz and a team of scientists.

SEE ALSO: Scientists left camera traps to record wild apes

Two other new species, Rhombophryne proportionalis and Anodonthyla eximia, measuring 11–12 millimetres (around 0.45 inches), were also described in the study.

As noted by Scherz on his blog, two species of Mini are within the top 50 smallest frogs in the world, while the Mini scule — which only gets as large as 10.8 millimetres (0.43 inches) — is within the top 20 smallest frogs. Read more...

Swamp creatures descended upon a Senate hearing

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Fri, 03/29/2019 - 00:48

Swamp creatures protested the fact that President Trump is in fact, not draining the swamp.

Protesting the appointment of Secretary of the Interior nominee David Bernhardt, activists donned Creature from the Black Lagoon masks during his confirmation hearing.

Bernhardt, who used to lobby for oil and gas organizations, is Trump's pick to lead the department responsible for managing federal land and natural resources. A large part of the job is conservation, prompting environmental groups to question Bernhardt's ethics and conflicts of interest. Critics say that during his current stint as Acting Interior Secretary, his policy decisions are already biased in favor of his former clients. Read more...
