Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 04/28/2018 - 14:30

Seattle is leading the way.

The city is on the verge of tossing out old convictions for marijuana possession, and with legalization spreading across the country it's past time other cities and states follow suit.

According to The Hill, officials are looking to vacate old possession charges which have dogged 542 people over the years. In a statement, Seattle's Mayor spoke to the necessity of trying to undue the damage wrought by years of failed policy.

“Vacating charges for misdemeanor marijuana possession is a necessary step to correct the injustices of what was a failed war on drugs, which disproportionately affected communities of color in Seattle,” wrote Mayor Jenny Durkan. Read more...

After 'Infinity War,' which 'Avengers 4' heroes will lead the fight?

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 04/28/2018 - 14:20
SPOILERS AHEAD for Avengers: Infinity War. This post discusses the end of the new movie in detail, so you should stop reading here if you haven't seen it.

Whether or not you saw it coming, the explosive "basically everyone you love is dead now" ending to Avengers: Infinity War spells major implications for the events of Avengers 4.

Here's what we know: Thanos won, assembling the Infinity Gauntlet and completing his goal of wiping out half the population of the entire universe. He snapped his fingers and it was done.

SEE ALSO: We need to talk about the ending of 'Avengers: Infinity War'

Following the finger-snap, we saw a group of key heroes and other important players melt away into dust. They're probably not dead dead, but all indications suggest they won't be around to save the universe in Avengers 4, at least not right away. Read more...

These 8 books are required reading for anyone who wants to change the world with tech

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 04/28/2018 - 14:00

"Changing the world," the rallying cry of the technology industry, sounds like a concept bursting with optimism. But in reality, it's complicated.

Take Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg's creation, built under the banner of "move fast and break things," certainly changed the world. But the creation of Facebook has also impacted democracy, privacy, communication, and even the nature of truth, in unforeseen ways; Facebook has since disavowed that motto (and Zuckerberg was harangued for his company's association with it while testifying before congress). Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 04/28/2018 - 14:00

When celebrities interact with each other, it can be fun and exciting. But sometimes it's not. That is also fine and weirdly interesting.

Yes, celebrities can just be normal people who comment on each other's Instagram posts like normal, boring people. That is, just like us, except we didn't star in Batman vs. Superman.

SEE ALSO: We've shortened the height of these attractive celebrities so you can scroll through them before your boss sees

To prove that celebrities can be just like us (!), we've rounded up some truly banal, even basic, social media interactions. Because it's super weird with famous people talk like normies.  Read more...

She pointed the way to a better Facebook... in 1988

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 04/28/2018 - 11:00

Before Facebook, there was Echo.

Stacy Horn thought of it back in 1988. Back then, there were no VCs throwing money at dotcoms, because the Web as we know it didn’t exist. You could use it to chat in real-time, send emails to friends, and debate in threads about everything from politics to music. There was no slick interface, photos, or even colors — it was text only. You connected with a telnet client and entered text commands to navigate around. Still, by 1990, it got so popular, the phone company had to dig up her street to install a dedicated phone line to her Greenwich Village apartment.  Read more...

Now you can see China's solar power boom from space

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 04/28/2018 - 11:00

China is the world's biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, but it's also leading the world in clean energy investment and deployment. The growth in China's solar power sector, in particular, has been swift.

According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, China added 53 gigawatts of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity in 2017 alone, up from 30 gigawatts the year before. Part of the reason for this large increase? The Chinese government paid subsidies to developers of solar projects so as not to build more of the coal-fired power plants fouling the air in the country.

I texted all the random numbers in my phone. Here's what happened.

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Sat, 04/28/2018 - 10:00

This post is part of Mashable's Spring Cleaning Week. Just a little something to distract you from the eternal dread of constantly wiping all those fingerprints off your screen.

It required a glass of wine. A big one.

On a weeknight, I settled down at my dining room table to do something no one should have to do, ever: Text all the names in my phone's contact list that I did not recognize.

SEE ALSO: Do the decent thing and send one of these texts instead of ghosting

The idea was to reach out to people and numbers I couldn't identify, ask if they remembered me, and delete the "Contact" if neither of us knew when, where, how, or, why that contact had ever been established. Previous scans through my contact lists on bored evenings had made me realize I had dozens of these digital lurkers; friends said that they did, too. It was time to clean house, and subject myself to just a bit of squirmy torture. Read more...
