Ansel Elgort perfectly reenacts 'Baby Driver' in the bomb cyclone

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 01/04/2018 - 17:28

There are lots of ways to celebrate a snow day, but Ansel Elgort may have us all beat.

The Baby Driver star took his car out for a literal spin during the East Coast "bomb cyclone" for a few speedy loops in the snow.

Please note: Baby is a professional Baby Driver. Do not try this at home.

SEE ALSO: Gripping 'Baby Driver' action sequence is exactly why we're loving Ansel Elgort

In Baby Driver, Elgort plays the titular Baby and driver, a teen with tinnitus who drives escaping criminals to make extra cash. Elgort's blizzard antics are a genuine preview of the film, which delights in multiple high-speed car chases set to whatever Baby is listening to on his iPod. We'll assume Elgort has earphones on under that hoodie to stay in character. Read more...

Why this UK public figure deleted 50K tweets in a day

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 01/04/2018 - 17:12

The name Toby Young has been plastered all over Brits' Twitter feeds this week after he was appointed the UK's new universities regulator — a position created by the government to uphold free speech at third level, among other things.

But just days after his appointment, Young deleted a huge chunk of his digital footprint. All in the space of a day.

SEE ALSO: Trump Twitter notifications have completely ruined my year

We're not talking about the deletion of the odd misjudged tweet posted during one's early adulthood. 54-year-old Young deleted nearly 50 thousand tweets in a day in an effort to erase racist, misogynistic, anti-LGBTQ, and sexually explicit tweets, some of which date back to 2009.   Read more...

The time has come for Mark Zuckerberg to reveal his 2018 personal challenge

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 01/04/2018 - 16:38

Mark Zuckerberg is using 2018 as even further incentive to fix the hot mess that is Facebook.

On Thursday Zuck announced — via Facebook of course — his annual "personal challenge." It's a tradition he started in 2009 in which he kicks off each new year by committing to learning something new.

Over the years, he says, he's visited every state in the U.S., run 365 miles, built an AI for his own house, read 25 books, and even learned Mandarin. But in 2018 the Facebook CEO will work toward fixing important issues on the social media platform.

Good.

Even weather experts are in awe of the 'bomb cyclone'

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 01/04/2018 - 16:32

The bomb cyclone is here, and it's astounding even the most seasoned weather experts.

This storm intensified at one of the fastest rates ever recorded for an East Coast, non-tropical storm system, which caught the attention of even the most jaded weather geeks. On Twitter, they're marveling at images of the storm, which — it must be admitted — does look incredibly striking as it hits the East Coast.

With Samsung's newest chip, the Galaxy S9 could mimic the iPhone X

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 01/04/2018 - 16:06

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 01/04/2018 - 16:05

Japanese automobile manufacturer, Nissan, has just unveiled a new technology that interprets the drivers' brain signals to tell which actions they intend to take next. The system, called "Brain-to-Vehicle" technology, can then transmit this information to the car's driver assist functions so that they initiate the desired maneuver hundreds of milliseconds before the driver can actually react. Nissan will demonstrate the system using a driving simulator at CES 2018 in Las Vegas. Read more...

Doug Jones' gay son sentences Mike Pence to life in side-eye prison

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 01/04/2018 - 15:44

Yesterday was a historic moment for side-eye — and, you know, the state of Alabama or whatever.

Democrat Doug Jones was sworn in Wednesday by Vice President Mike Pence, making him Alabama's first Democratic Senator in 25 years. Alongside the newly minted senator was his son, Carson Jones, who is gay. During the swearing in, Carson delivered  some seriously harsh side-eye to our infamously anti-gay vice president.

The best shows to binge during this wild winter storm weekend

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 01/04/2018 - 15:31

Climate change is probably coming for us like the Night King's army on Game of Thrones, but at least we get to start the year with a snow day and some work-mandated remote hours.

So now that you're out of school or the office and trapped in swirling vortex of icy tomb, WHAT SHOULD YOU WATCH FIRST? Fear not, cold brethren, for we have you covered. Check out 10 shows you can binge right now to make the most of your bomb cyclone long weekend.

1Search Party

The TBS show may seem like formula on paper; it's got a core cast of New York millennials who are struggling and self-absorbed, but Alia Shawkat, John Early, Meredith Hagner, and John Paul Reynolds are an alchemical combination. What gives the show its edge is how well it teeters on the ed of the macabre; Dory (Shawkat) becomes morbidly fascinated with a missing high school classmate to the point where the search consumes her life and thoughts. Season 2 deals with the fallout from a shocking finale and is as transfixing and perversely humorous as the first. We say from experience that you can binge a season in a day. Read more...

Incredible photos from space show off the historic East Coast 'bomb cyclone'

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 01/04/2018 - 15:28

The East Coast "bomb cyclone" on Thursday looks both beautiful and sinister from space.

While scientists have been tracking storms using satellites in orbit for decades, they now have a brand new tool at their disposal: GOES-16, also called GOES-East.

The brand new satellite — which wasn't available to scientists last winter — is one of the most powerful weather-watching tools in history, able to take snapshots of the storm every minute.

The result? Some truly astonishing images.

SEE ALSO: A 'bomb cyclone,' explained

The storm, which is bringing blizzard conditions to areas from Virginia to Maine, along with hurricane-force wind gusts and damaging coastal flooding, looks like a classic non-tropical storm. It took on a comma shape, drawing in moisture all the way from the Bahamas, and dumping it into an Arctic air mass in place over the Mid-Atlantic and East Coast.  Read more...

The first stage pours wine onto a sheet to expose it to air, the next stage separates it into droplets, and the third filters it down into your glass. Ellen DeGeneres hates to disappoint Eric Trump, but promises she's not in the #Deep State

Mashable - Social Media Marketing tips - Thu, 01/04/2018 - 15:16

Yesterday, Trump's son Eric had some concerns about Twitter's follower recommendations, when the social media platform suggested he follow Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Ellen DeGeneres. It didn't sit well with him and he called the whole thing #DeepState.

On Wednesday's The Ellen Show, the host said she had a hard time believing why her name was trending.

"I saw that movie where the lady has sex with the fish, and this beats that," Ellen said, referring to The Shape of Water.

She said she had never heard of the Deep State conspiracy theory, which presumes an entrenched government bureaucracy is working together to destabilize Trump. However, she said she's just too busy with her Illuminati brunches with Beyoncé and trying to have a baby with her wife Portia de Rossi to be wrapped up in such things. Read more...
